After four weeks of not losing any weight, I was really, really close to giving up. It wasn't that I wanted to start gaining weight again, but all the calorie counting? I almost stopped. But I didn't feel like I had really given it everything I had, so I decided to try one more week of doing things differently and see what happened.
And so, at the beginning of last week, I started strength training. I also tried to stop eating after dinner, unless it was something very, very light. And when we went out for a date night, we got sushi instead of cream-based-sauce-laden pasta. We did go to Sonic, where they now have the option of getting a Reeses Sonic Blast with chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla. I decided that would be my splurge item of the week - and when I got home and found out it was 700+ calories, I got really anxious about whether or not I would once again be seeing the exact same number on the scale.
I did strength training at the gym three days, went to one Zumba class, and tried to at least get out and walk with the boys on the days I didn't go to the gym. To my surprise, when I got on the scale Monday morning, I had lost two pounds!
So strength training has won me over. I have been reading a lot about how cardio is really not the most efficient way to burn calories and lose fat. It's not bad, and it is important, but if you want to lose fat, the key, apparently, is strength training. I wouldn't have believed it until I tried it for myself. But not only did I lose those two pounds, the jeans that I bought right before I got pregnant with Cohen (when I weighed 14 pounds less than I do now), actually fit without me using a rubber band to keep them closed! So some way or another, I'm losing inches, too.
It's actually become a problem in the wardrobe department, because I don't fit into all of my pre-pregnancy jeans, but the maternity pants don't stay up anymore. I don't want to buy new pants just yet, because I hope that I will go down at least another size before all is said and done. But honestly, the feeling of loose maternity corduroys is pretty good.
So I've got 4 pounds until I'm at my pre-wedding weight, 14 pounds until I'm at my pre-Cohen weight, and 26 pounds until I'm at my ultimate goal weight (which I don't know is even attainable, but if I can make it to the pre-Cohen number, then I'm going to give it a shot!).
Keep at it! The slower it comes off, the longer it will STAY off :) After 19 months, I finally reached my pre-preg weight TODAY. Only 20 more till my goal!
